What's wrong with us?

A woman was crying and begging for help; in the middle of downtown Toronto. Everybody looked the other way, pretending to hear neither nor see. I was one of them until I got very ashamed of myself. I knelt down beside her and asked what would help. One of my colleagues did the same. All we could do was to flag down and pay for a cab to have her drive where she thought she needed to be.

Yes, she was poor and sick and more than confused. Is this any justification to ignore this unmistakable cry for humanity and help?

I bet if she had been able to turn herself into a cute little kitten, many more people would have stopped and tried to help.
